Playing the Pebble Beach Golf Courses When You're Not a Resort Guest

Asked by: Lindsay W., United Kingdom
Answered by Craig Better |

Quail Lodge is an accommodation alternative when playing Pebble Beach Golf Course.

Three friends and I are planning to take a Pebble Beach golf vacation in 2010 to celebrate my friend's 40th birthday. How can we reserve a tee time at the Pebble Beach Golf Course without staying at the exorbitantly priced resort itself?

Unfortunately, if you're not a guest of Pebble Beach Resorts, you can only make tee times at Pebble Beach Golf Course one day in advance, and that hardly seems like it would work for the Pebble Beach golf vacation you're planning.

To make true, advance tee times for Pebble Beach Golf Course, you need to stay at least two nights at one of the resort hotels for every one round you wish to play. Guests of the Lodge at Pebble Beach and the Inn at Spanish Bay can book tee times up to 18 months in advance; Casa Palmero guests can book 12 months out.

The rules are little different, and somewhat more lenient, with respect to playing the other Pebble Beach golf courses. Non-resort guests can book tee times at The Links at Spanish Bay (or Del Monte Golf Course) up to two months in advance; for Spyglass Hill Golf Course, it's one month in advance. That's still likely not enough time for your purposes, so, again, you'll need to stay at the resort to get the long lead time you need. The only difference with these courses is, you only have to stay one night per round you wish to play.

If you do decide to stay off-site during your Pebble Beach golf vacation, one place we recommend for a small group is the Quail Lodge (quaillodge.com), for its beautifully appointed rooms, lush grounds, and personal service. It has its own golf course, too.

Two other lodging options that appear to be quite charming are: the Cypress Inn (cypress-inn.com) and its bed-and-breakfast sister property, Casa de Carmel (casadecarmel.com).

Hi Miro. Taking personal-use pictures or video of Pebble Beach Golf Links while you're playing it is OK, but you can't do it if you're planning on reselling the images. It's our understanding that Joann Dost is the official photographer for Pebble Beach Golf Links, and if you've seen her amazing images, you know why. We've heard talk that PBGL lately has been discouraging personal picture taking, but I called today and the word from the pro shop was that it's OK. Of course, if someone is doing it to the point of slowing down play, they will probably be asked to curtail it.
